6 Easiest Gymnastics Skills to Master

Updated: Feb 26

Gymnastics can be intimidating, we get it. But by setting realistic goals and starting off small, we know anyone can achieve great heights. This sport is a wonderful way to get active, flexible, and strong. In our beginner classes, our qualified coaches will help you get started in gymnastics by teaching you the basics (don’t worry, they’re very patient). So let’s take a look at how to do some of the oldest tricks in the book, all of which are taught at our adult beginners’ classes!

1. Forward roll

This simple tumbling skill is an essential start to gymnastics. A forward roll is ideal for introducing focused balance and movement to your body, as well as paving the way to perfect more advanced skills later on. Simply lay your hands flat on the ground, curl up and push forward. Here’s a short video to help.

2. Bridge

Perfecting a bridge is an excellent way to increase flexibility throughout your body, especially in your back and shoulders. If you sit at a desk all day, this move will stretch your spine and allow you to move onto more advanced tricks.

3. Handstand

This classic gymnastics move is the perfect first step to mastering other skills (and impressing your friends!) It requires core and upper body strength, as well as a great level of balance. Learning to handstand by walking backwards up a wall can be a really easy way to master this skill.

4. Cartwheel

A cartwheel is a little more advanced, but still a realistic skill to master in a few weeks. I’m sure you remember these from the school playground, which means the muscle memory is in there somewhere! This move greatly boosts your upper body strength while teaching balance and coordination. There’s a video for this one too.

5. Round off

After you’ve got that cartwheel down, it’s time to start practising your round offs. Round offs are similar to the previous skill, but with a half turn that ends in a slight jump. This skill will help you build more momentum than a cartwheel, allowing you to build those flipping and tumbling moves when you move into our intermediate class. Take a look at this video.

6. Splits

Finally, the skill everyone wishes to master at some point in their life: the splits. It may feel like you’re a long way off, but with consistent gymnastics lessons and stretching, you’ll be bendy enough in no time! If you want to focus on building your flexibility in particular, our adult flexibility classes will be ideal for helping you stretch out those tense muscles.
