How to Support Your Child Gymnast: A Parent’s Guide

You’ve done it. You’ve sent your child off to their first gymnastics lesson and

they’re loving it! They’re enjoying making friends, being active and feeling extra cute in their sparkly leotard – and you’ve even got a couple of extra hours off! However,

it’s important that the encouragement doesn’t stop when they’re at home, so here’s

how you can go above and beyond to encourage your child to become an

exceptional gymnast and fully enjoy their classes, whether they’re a beginner or they

compete.

1. Think happy thoughts.

It’s totally normal for us to compare ourselves to our peers, even as kids, so if

your child is comparing their progress to their friend’s, that’s okay! However,

reinforcing a positive mindset by focussing on your child’s successes and

achievements in gymnastics can be really supportive and ensure your child doesn’t

develop any insecurities surrounding exercise and competition. Remind them that

effort, consistency, and enjoyment are far more important than perfection.

2. Eat up!

Healthy eating can fuel an energised session in a way that nothing else truly can.

Giving your child a nutritious diet and ensuring they stay hydrated, especially just

before and after a gymnastics lesson, can be really important in supporting their

physical demands.

3. Build a balanced schedule.

In between schoolwork, visiting House of GPA, and any other extracurricular

activities they may have, your child may have little time to rest. Maintaining a well-

rounded lifestyle will ensure your little one doesn’t experience burn out, and set them

up for a happy, healthy life.

4. Don’t push them too hard.

We all want our kids to do well, and love seeing them happy when they achieve

great results. However, being overbearing can sometimes put your child off wanting

to partake in gymnastics. We understand this is a hard balance to get right, but

maintaining your kid’s confidence while ensuring they don’t feel pressured into

completing an activity can be vital to their development and well-being.

By keeping to these rules, you will ensure your child reaches their full mental

and physical potential in gymnastics. We want kids to make the most out of their

lessons here at House of GPA and can’t wait to watch them grow!
