Why should my child do performing arts/musical theatre?

This term, at the House of GPA, our kids have been studying the play and story: Matilda.

Matilda is a strong, confident and intelligent character, dealing with hardships using wit and humour in a way worthy of aspiration. We love how performing arts can channel our little performers' energy into a story they love and can draw imagination from. We have watched our kids increase in confidence over the term, learning to talk and pose like Matilda, playing the characters with voices and dramatic acting.

In light of our successful term, we wanted to write a blog discussing the benefits of performing arts for your children.

  1. Confidence: Performing arts and acting is a fantastic way for children to leave their shells and push back against anxiety or fear of being vocal. It is a great channel to funnel their energy into after a long day or week at school.

  2. Communication: In an increasingly digital world, children are struggling more and more with basic communication with their peers. Musical theatre is a great way for your children to interact and speak to each other in new and exciting ways. We like to emphasise autonomy and encourage children to be creative and this can be hugely helpful with communication skills.

  3. Entertainment: Sometimes it can be difficult to think of how to entertain your little ones for a weekend or after school. One of the best ways to get them out of the house, off their iPads and phones, and interacting with other children is through a creative outlet like performing arts.

  4. Friends: Children benefit from meeting a wide range of people with different interests. In House of GPA, we have seen children with similar interests bond, and friendships flourish through funny scenes which see them on the floor in a fit of laughter.

At the House of GPA, we are so proud of our kids and the way their acting flourishes through the term. We hope to see some of your kids in the near future!
